Mogadishu

The prevailing story of Somalia these days is one of progress, it has a legitimate government and its economy is picking up. However, this change for the better is having little noticeable positive impact on the lives of displaced people in Mogadishu where still, the living conditions can be described as inhumane. Many of these people had arrived in the war-ravaged capital in 2011 as a result of a famine that provoked widespread displacement. Although the famine is over, insecurity persists in much of south-central Somalia. Even if some opt to return home in the coming months, the displaced will remain a significant part of Mogadishu’s landscape for a considerable time. Photographed in 2012.
